BAND Guest Conductor
Marcellus Brown
Boise State University – Boise, ID
Marcellus Brown came to Boise State University in the fall
of 1989 as Director of Band Organizations and Professor of
Trumpet. Presently, he teaches trumpet, instrumental
conducting and serves as the Director of the University
Symphonic Winds and the Treasure Valley Concert.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Brown holds a Masters of
Music Degree in Trumpet Performance and Bachelor of Music
Education Degree from the University of Michigan where he
took conducting classes with Elizabeth Green. He has done
doctorial work at the University of Illinois where he
studied conducting with Harry Begian, Professor Emeritus of
Bands
Mr. Brown has done extensive work as a guest conductor,
clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States. This
includes appearances as a guest conductor at the Mid-West
International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois
and he has taught advanced conducting for the VanderCook
School of Music Summer Session.
Mr. Brown has been recognized for his work and dedication as
an educator at Boise State University as the recipient of
the 2002 Excellence In Teaching Award presented by the LDS
Student Association, the 2002 Faculty/Staff Larry G. Selland
Humanitarian Award presented by the University Women’s
Center and one of ten Honored Faculty of the 2003 Top Ten
Student Scholar Awards.
In 2006 Mr. Brown was elected into the American Bandmasters
Association and he is currently serving as President of the
College Band Directors National Association Northwestern
Division and this past year (2008) he was elected to the
board of the National Band Association.

DR. Peter Loel Boonshaft
Hofstra University – Hempstead, NY
Called “one of the most exciting and exhilarating voices in
music education today,” Peter Loel Boonshaft has been
invited to speak or conduct in every state in the nation and
around the world. He is author of the critically acclaimed
books Teaching Music with Passion and Teaching Music with
Purpose, as well as the soon to be released, Teaching Music
with Promise. He is currently on the faculty of Hofstra
University in Hempstead, New York, where he is Professor of
Music and Director of the Graduate Conducting Program. Dr.
Boonshaft has received official proclamations from the
Governors of four states and a Certificate of Appreciation
from former President Ronald Reagan, as well as performing
for former President and Mrs. George Bush, former President
Bill Clinton, and for Margaret Thatcher, former Prime
Minister of the United Kingdom. His honors also include
being selected three times as a National Endowment for the
Arts "Artist in Residence,” three times awarded Honorary
Life Membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and being
selected for the Center for Scholarly Research and Academic
Excellence at Hofstra University.
Extremely active as a guest conductor and educational
speaker for conferences, festivals, concerts and workshops
nationally and internationally, he has guest conducted the
MENC (The National Association for Music Education)
All-Eastern Band, MENC All-Northwest Band, MENC All-Eastern
Directors Band, and Goldman Memorial Band. He was also named
conductor of the MENC National High School Honors Band for
the National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. He has
served as a speaker for the Canadian Music Educators
Association National Convention, MENC National Conference,
Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music For
All/Bands and Orchestras of America Symposium, Samuel Barber
Institute for Music Educators, Music Education Center of
America, Conn-Selmer Institute, NESA Council of Overseas
Schools Conference in Bangkok, Thailand, and as keynote
speaker for the MENC Northwest Division Conference, MENC
Southern Division Conference, European Music Educators
Convention, National Convention of the American String
Teachers Association, National Convention of the American
School Band Directors Association, ACDA Western Division
Conference, and numerous state and regional music education
conventions.
