Dennis Carlson, Chamberlain
From high school valedictorian to
graduating magna cum laude from college, Dennis
Carlson has always been at the top of his class and
has taught his students the same work ethic and
passion that he possesses for music. Carlson serves
as
Chamberlain High School
instrumental instructor. He also assists the
Chamberlain Middle
School band and is a
member of the
Trinity
Lutheran Church
choir.
After graduating as highest-ranking
senior from
Black Hills
State University
in 1976, Carlson returned to his high school alma mater to enrich
the lives of young people through music. In 1980,
he received his master’s degree in music education
from
University of South
Dakota .
Carlson served on the South Dakota
Bandmasters Association Board from 1990 to 1994. In
2000-01, he was president of the
South Dakota
chapter of Phi Beta Mu, the international band director’s
fraternity. In 2001, Carlson was the recipient of
the South Dakota Outstanding Bandmaster Award.
Under Carlson’s direction, his bands
have been selected four times to present at the
South Dakota Music In-Service State Conference.
Prior to this year, 128 of his students have been
selected for the All-State Band and the All-State
Orchestra. His instrumental groups have won
numerous parade and marching competition superiors,
first place and Sweepstakes awards. Students under
his direction have received consistently high
ratings at large group and solo/ensemble contests.

James Glanzer, Madison
James Glanzer spent 33 years as a
music educator. During his music education career
he taught in the following school districts:
1966-1967 Hanson County Schools
1967-1970 Bridgewater Schools
1970-1971 Akron (Colorado) Schools
1971-1977 Bridgewater Schools
1977-1999 Lake Central School District
(Madison)
Mr. Glanzer grew up in
Bridgewater
South Dakota in a family where music was part
of their life. He began playing trumpet in
elementary school and was encouraged by his Band
director as a junior in High School to be a band
director. He continued his education at
Dakota
Wesleyan
University where he received a BME
degree. Later he attended the
University of Northern
Colorado where he
received a Master of Arts Degree.
When asked about high points in his
career, Mr Glanzer said that "Taking the Madison
Middle School Band and the Madison 8th Grade Bands
to the South Dakota Bandmaster conventions were
great moments in teaching." He was honored in 1990
as the South Dakota Bandmaster of the year by Phi
Beta Mu. The South Dakota Bandmasters are proud to
award Mr. Glanzer with induction in the “South
Dakota Bandmasters Hall of Fame” as he has truly
been a dedicated educator for the children of
South Dakota .
