There is one class designation for tennis competition in South Dakota. No qualifying tournaments are held for advancement to the state meet.

Players are seeded into 6 flights of singles competition and 3 flights of doubles competition. Seeds are based on the outcome of meets throughout the season and are finalized by agreement of team representatives.

When the #1 through #8 seeds are finalized for each flight of competition, a drawing is held to determine the placement of remaining players in a 32 player draw format with 5 rounds of competition to determine the flight champion.

Seeded players receive a first round bye. All players receive team points for advancing in their flight.
