member schools of the South Dakota High School
Activities Association are divided into two classes
of Class "A" and Class "B". Class
"A" shall be
the thirty-two largest schools that sponsor wrestling.
Class "B" includes all other schools.
the 2001-02 school year is according
to the Average Daily Membership from then 2002-03
2002 Class "B"
2002 Class "A"
will be in the following fourteen weight
103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135,140,
145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 275.
State Individual: Four from each weight
class shall advance from
the Region Tournaments (Class "A" and
the State Tournament.
Dual Team: The
seeding formula for the State Dual Team Wrestling
Tournament will seed the four region champions
1 through 4 with seeds 1 and 4 placed in
the upper bracket and seeds 2 and 3 placed in the
lower bracket. The four region runner-ups will
be seeded 5 through 8 with the understanding
that they must be placed in the bracket
opposite their regional champion. First round
pairings will have the higher seeded region runner-up
wrestling the lower seeded regional champion
in each bracket respectively.
Format: At the State Tournament a Double
with four mats will be used
until the final session. In the final session
of the State Tournament three mats will
be used to determine third, fifth and seventh
places. One mat will be used to determine
the champion of each weight class.
Pairings in the
thirteen weight classes for each
State Wrestling Tournament (Class B &
A) follows a pre-determined plan with the drawings
for each of the weight classes conducted
by the Executive Staff at the SDHSAA
Headquarters. The first round pairings
will always have the first place qualifiers
wrestling the fourth place qualifiers
and the second place qualifiers wrestling
the third place qualifiers. Wrestlers
will not be paired against someone from
their region in the first round.
The dual team
tournament will be held on the
Thursday prior to the individual state tournament
(February 21, 2002). The top two
teams from the region tournaments will qualify
for the state tournament. First round matches
will begin at 1:00 p.m. on four mats.
The semi-final matches (championship and
consolation) will begin at 3:00 p.m. on four
mats. The final round will begin at 5:00 p.m.
on four mats. The
four region champions will be seeded 1 through
4 and the four region runner ups will
be seeded 5 through 8 using the following
Head to Head dual meet competition (last
dual, if more than one) b.
Dual record against common opponents c.
Dual team winning percentage d.
Lottery draw. The

Each team may have a maximum of 16 individuals
on their roster. Rosters must be submitted
prior to the start of first round competition.
awards will be presented
to the top eight teams. trophies will be presented
to the champion and runner-up teams with
plaques presented to the next six teams. Medals
are awarded to the top eight places for each
weight class and for each member of the championship
and runner-up teams. Board of Directors
Members will personally present all individual
and team awards.
